Meet Sharon-Rose Gittens (RN; B.Sc.; M.Ed.; M.S.W)
Behind my last name “Gittens” which I inherited twenty-five years ago lies a number of letters separated by semi-colons which speaks not just to who I was or who I am but who I am becoming by God’s direction. Permit me therefore in my short biography to focus on those letters and semi colons beginning with what those semi-colons mean; my passion for service within the human service organisations.
Having worked as a General Nurse in the private and public hospitals of Barbados I was able to gain a deeper appreciation on how our societies function in providing excellent health care through team work. As I first entered UWI Cave Hill to pursue studies a Bachelors of Sociology I declared myself a true functionalist seeking harmonious relationships first, rather than conflict. My relationship with UWI did not end on my graduation day September 17, 1997. It awarded me the service to UWI Cave Hill Campus as a Part-time Lecturer in the Department of Government, Sociology and Social Work until 2013. My last semi-colon; during the year 2005-2013 as a Welfare Officer with a first Masters of Education and a dissertation on Domestic Violence, A Perpetrator’s Perspective, I successfully completed the best Internship of my life at Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) to acquire my second Masters, that of Social Work. Throughout this challenging yet rewarding journey of nursing, educator and social worker I accepted the blessings to be wife of one, Mr. Roger Gittens and mother of two adult boys, Myles and Jazz Gittens in a musical family. Being part of ‘Noneinthree’ has therefore added the exact amount of toppings to my hybrid of professional and personal development.
Meet Shakiel Stoute: A musician and assistant in piloting Jesse
Shakiel Stoute describes himself as a very innovative, creative music producer, audio engineer and musician, who always had a love and passion for music. In the early stages of his musical journey it was just a hobby, something he loved and enjoyed doing, never thinking he would pursue a career in music in his later years. As he grew older so did his love for music and throughout his journey he has played the recorder, keyboard and his favourite, the drums. He has also achieved various awards in music. He further extended this into becoming a studio owner where he further improves his gifts and talents in music production and audio engineering. He is also very passionate about technology.
It is this love of technology which attracted him to becoming involved in the piloting of the serious computer game Jesse among school children in Barbados. He was therefore interviewed and later joined a small team in learning about and becoming familiar with the game before the piloting. In one ‘experimental’ school he worked alongside the Lead Researcher in supervising 30 children as they were introduced to and played the game for the five pilot days. He was also instrumental in manually downloading from three ‘experimental’ schools, the game analysis data from each computer after the children had finished playing the game through the 5 Levels. Shakiel further describes himself as a very humble person who loves what he does and is always willing to show and teach others.
