This Act may be cited as the Domestic Violence (Protection Orders) (Amendment) Act, 2016.
The bill covers the following:
- “Make provision for a comprehensive definition of term “domestic violence”
- extend the classes of person who are considered to be victims of domestic violence
- Ensure that victims of domestic violence receive appropriate counselling or therapy
- Facilitate the enrollment of perpetrators of domestic violence in the appropriate rehabilitative programmes
- extend the classes of person who may intervene in applications before the Court on behalf of victims of domestic violence
- establish the duties and powers of members of the police force in relation to allegations of domestic violence, including the power to issue emergency protection orders
- Maximize the safety and protection of victims and ensure that perpetrators of domestic violence are held accountable, and for related matters
