This Act may be cited as the Domestic Violence (Protection Orders) (Amendment) Act, 2016.

The bill covers the following:

  1. “Make provision  for a comprehensive definition of term “domestic violence”
  2.  extend the classes of person who are considered to be victims of domestic violence 
  3.  Ensure  that victims of domestic violence receive appropriate counselling or therapy
  4.  Facilitate the enrollment of perpetrators of domestic violence in the appropriate rehabilitative programmes
  5.  extend the classes of person who may intervene in applications before the Court on behalf of  victims  of domestic violence
  6.  establish the duties and powers of members of the police force in relation to allegations of domestic violence, including  the power to issue emergency protection  orders 
  7.  Maximize the safety and protection of victims and ensure that perpetrators of domestic violence are held accountable, and for related matters
