The None in Three (Ni3) Centre is delighted to welcome Visiting Professor Stephen Jacobson to deliver a public lecture entitled ‘Social justice leadership for academic, organizational and community sustainability in high need schools: Research evidence from three nations’. Professor Jacobson is a Distinguished Professor of Educational Leadership at University at Buffalo, State University of New York, Fulbright Scholar and member of the Ni3 International Advisory Group.
In his lecture, Professor Jacobson will report on the findings of studies conducted from a social justice perspective on successful school leadership in high need schools in three nations. The three studies used a common conceptual framework, case study methodology and semi-structured interview protocol developed initially for the International Successful School Principalship Project and subsequently modified by the International School Leadership Development Network for high need schools.
The case studies examined early childhood education centres in New Zealand, elementary schools in the United States and a secondary school in Belize. Across these different educational contexts, the findings revealed leaders who exhibited a common set of core practices for successful leadership (Leithwood and Riehl, 2005) built upon a transformative social justice and communitarian orientation. This led each of them to engage their school community (students, teachers, parents and other community members) in the process of partnering to improve the academic performance of students, as well as the economic viability and sustainability of their school and community.
