Ni3 shares key research findings at Eurocrim 2021 conference

Centre member Sam Mason, Research Assistant on the Ni3 GCRF project quantitative work package (led by Kathryn Sharratt), recently presented Ni3 findings at Eurocrim 2021, the European Society of Criminology’s annual conference (8-10 September). The conference included content on crime, criminal justice, policing, imprisonment, violence and gender issues, and brought together experts from a range of academic disciplines from across the globe. This year due to the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic, the conference was held entirely online.

The presentation focused on key findings from None in Three’s UK, psychosocial survey, undertaken as part of Ni3’s GCRF (Global Challenges Research Fund) project, funded through UK Research & Innovation and the University of Huddersfield. The survey of 2812 young people in the UK aged 10-18 included questions about participants’ exposure and attitudes towards violence, abuse and neglect.

The presentation covered:

• What are we actually researching when we research child maltreatment (physical, sexual, emotional abuse, neglect, exposure to domestic violence, sibling violence)
• What we know to date about child maltreatment in the UK
• Psychological implications of being maltreated in childhood/adolescence
• Objectives and rationale for the psychosocial survey
• Methodology – Why we used Latent Class Analysis (enables real life patterns in maltreatment experiences to be identified), participants and survey contents
• Latent Class Profiles, associations with sociodemographics (were certain children more likely to belong to a specific class?) and psychological implications

The results of the survey revealed a number of key findings which will also be shared as part of a forthcoming publication from the Ni3 Centre, watch this space!

The None in Three Centre team has also conducted a similar psychosocial survey with children based in Uganda, Jamaica and India, with over 30,000 surveys being completed and analysed across the four countries (including the UK).
